Full Pull Benchmark Reoffer

Hello friends. We originally offered Woodward Canyon’s 2013 Artist Series Cabernet back in May. That vintage is beginning to dwindle, so today we offer one last opportunity to access this benchmark Washington Cab. The wine has also earned a strong review since we originally offered it, and we’ll include that as well:

What makes this a benchmark for Washington Cabernet? I’d say three things: quality, consistency, and longevity. This is Artist Series #22 for Woodward Canyon. The program has been around since 1992, and it is such a wonderful, characterful wine, year in and year out. What about Quilceda Creek Cab? Leonetti Cab? Woodward’s Old Vine Cab? Fair enough, but those price points are around $140 and $120 and $110. Woody Artist Series isn’t exactly cheap, but neither is it priced in the stratosphere (note: our price today represents a solid discount off the winery’s release price of $59).

For the fourth vintage running, Artist Series sees a sizeable chunk of Champoux fruit that usually ends up in Old Vines, as well as hearty portions of Sagemoor (also a regular Old Vines target) and Woodward’s wonderful Estate Vineyard. The remainder is an all-star cast, including Discovery, Charbonneau, Spring Creek, and Summit View.

It clocks in at 14.4% listed alc (Rick Small and Kevin Mott have been dialing back both alcohol and new oak for a few years now) and opens with a nose of crème de cassis and fig fruit paired to the kind of graphitic minerality that only good Horse Heaven vineyards like Champoux and Discovery can bring. Eucalyptus topnotes keep things fresh and add yet another layer of complexity to an already complicated nose. The palate continues the theme of pinpoint balance between fruit and mineral elements; it’s like a dense core of rock surrounded by the blackest fruits and smoky spices. The espressoey finish is long and rich, chewy and satisfying. My last note: “pass the ribeye.”
